Your AC cooling has dropped off, the unit is clearly running, and you are trying to decide whether to call. In a Dubai August that worry is common, and the answer is not always a callout. Sometimes the unit is doing all it can against the heat; sometimes it is warning you. This guide helps you tell the two apart.
What AC cooling is realistic when it is 45°C outside
An air conditioner moves heat out of the room, and the harder the outside heat pushes in, the harder it works to stay ahead. On a 45°C Dubai afternoon, a healthy, correctly sized unit will still cool the room. But there is a limit to how cold it can realistically pull the air.
The grill temperature test
The most useful check you can do is feel the air coming out of the indoor grill. On a healthy unit it runs cool and steady, roughly 13°C to 16°C on a thermometer. You will not have a temperature gun at home, so stand where the air blows and feel whether it is genuinely cool and strong.
The thermostat gap test
Set the thermostat to 18°C and give it time. A working unit should bring the room down to around 21°C or 22°C. If it is stuck at 25°C with the thermostat set low and hours on the clock, that gap is your signal that something is off.
Three reasons an AC runs but does not cool that are faults
When the air at the grill is weak or warm and the room will not come down, these are the three most common causes our technicians find.
- Low gas. This is the most common of all. When refrigerant runs low the unit keeps running but cannot cool properly. Gas does not simply get used up, so a low level usually points to a leak somewhere in the system.
- Blocked filters or coils. A clogged filter or a dirty coil chokes the airflow through the unit. The unit runs, but far less cool air reaches the room. This is the one most often prevented by a routine service.
- A failing compressor. The compressor is the pump at the heart of the system. When it starts to fail the cooling drops off even though the unit still switches on and the fan still turns.
Three reasons an AC underperforms that are not faults
Just as often, the unit is fine and something else explains the weak cooling. None of these needs a repair.
- The room is too big for the unit. A unit sized for one space will struggle if it is asked to cool a much larger area. This matters most where a home has several units covering different sized rooms.
- Doors or windows are open. The unit can still cool with them open, but it takes far longer and it can cause condensation problems along the way. Keeping the space closed lets the unit get ahead.
- An undersized unit after a renovation. This one catches people out. If a wall has come down or a room has been extended and the same AC is left in place, the unit is now too small for the space it has to cool.
What you can safely check yourself before calling
A few checks are simple, safe and often solve the problem without a visit.
- Check the air filter. If it is visibly clogged, a clean can restore airflow.
- Feel the airflow at the grill: is it cool, and is it strong?
- Check the thermostat setting. It sounds obvious, but a setting left too high is a common and free fix. On one recent callout the unit was set to 34°C; dropping it to 20°C took the grill temperature from 26°C to around 15°C and the room cooled normally.
- Listen for unusual noise. A loud noise from the unit can point to a mechanical problem.
- Run it on full cold for a while. If after several hours it is still not cooling at all, that is a clear sign to call.
What to leave to a technician
Some parts of an AC system are not safe to open and are best left alone. Please do not attempt to work on any of the following:
- The outdoor unit or condenser, which carries high voltage and moving parts.
- The gas or refrigerant lines.
- Electrical parts inside the unit, such as the board, capacitors or wiring.
- The compressor.
- Anything inside the indoor unit beyond the removable filter.
When waiting turns a weak unit into a dead one
Most of the time a unit that cools weakly is not urgent, and in fact a single AC unit not cooling is treated as a non-emergency rather than a crisis. There is one important exception.
If your unit has had a gas refill and still will not cool, do not keep running it. An AC with no gas lets the compressor overheat and ice form inside. Left on that way, it can wreck the motor and compressor, turning a leak into a far costlier repair. Switch it off and have it looked at.

Why is my AC running but not cooling the room?
It is usually one of two things. Either the unit is fine and something else is at play, such as a thermostat set too high, an open door, or a room too large for the unit, or there is a real fault, most often low gas, a blocked filter or coil, or a tired compressor. Feeling the air at the grill is the quickest way to start telling them apart.
